What you need to know

Welcome to Ubwali Masterclass. Year-round, the magazine accepts applications from interested students to join that year’s cohort of writers who will participate in a week-long virtual writing masterclass offered by award-winning writers from across the world. The class will be cross-genre, giving participants the tools to create, revise and edit their work. Two former Ubwali writers, regardless of nationality, may attend the class for free and will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis. Three Zambian writers who have been published in Ubwali may also attend the class for free and will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis. Ten additional spots, regardless of nationality or residence, are available at a cost of $20 per participant. Writers at any stage of their writing journey are welcome.

To apply, please submit a 1000-word prose sample or a single poem not exceeding five pages as a Word or PDF attachment to ubwalimagazine@gmail.com between January and July. Writers may only submit in only one genre at a time. Writing samples must be unpublished at the time of the application and must remain unpublished until completion of the class. If accepted to attend for free, authors must wait at least two years before re-applying. Authors who occupy a paid spot may apply to attend as frequently as possible.

2024 Instructors will be announced by May.
